Why Reinvent Doesn't Feel Like an Op Shop — And Why That's Deliberate

"What a beautiful shop!"

It's one of the comments we hear almost every day at Reinvent.

Closely followed by:

"Is all of this really pre-loved?"

I absolutely love hearing it because when I created Reinvent, I was very deliberate about the kind of shopping experience I wanted women to have.

I love the treasure hunt of pre-loved fashion and discovering something fabulous you weren't expecting to find. But I also knew traditional second-hand shopping wasn't for everyone.

Some women find huge racks of clothing overwhelming. They don't want to spend hours searching through hundreds of garments hoping to find something in their size, style or condition.

So I wanted to do things differently.

Pre-Loved, But With a Boutique Experience

Reinvent is a women's consignment boutique rather than an op shop, and there's an important difference.

Op shops do an incredible job in our communities and play a huge role in keeping clothing out of landfill. Reinvent simply has a different business model.

Every piece of clothing in our boutique is individually selected for consignment. We look at the brand, age, condition, style, quality and whether we believe our customers will want to buy it.

That means not everything we're offered makes it onto the racks.

And that's deliberate.

I'd rather have fewer beautiful pieces that are easy to shop than racks so full you can't actually see what's there.

Curated, Not Crammed

This is probably one of the biggest differences customers notice when they walk into Reinvent.

Space.

I don't want our racks packed to the point where you have to wrestle a garment off the rail.

I want you to be able to walk around, see what's available and actually enjoy looking.

Our clothing is organised by category and size, making it easy to browse whether you're looking for a blazer, a dress for an event, new workwear or simply something fabulous you weren't expecting to find.

Pre-loved shopping can still feel beautiful, calm and organised.

Quality Over Quantity

One of the things we're probably best known for is being fussy.

And I'm quite happy with that!

Our customers trust us to do some of the hard work before clothing ever reaches the shop floor.

We check for stains, marks, pilling, pulls, holes, missing buttons, faulty zips and signs of excessive wear. We also consider whether the style is still current and the overall condition of the garment.

Does the occasional little flaw slip past us? Of course. We're human.

But our standard is always:

Would we be happy to buy this ourselves?

If the answer is no, it shouldn't be on the rack.

"I Can't Believe This Is Pre-Loved!"

This might be my favourite comment of all.

Customers regularly pick something up and say:

"This looks brand new!"

Sometimes it actually is! We regularly receive clothing that's barely been worn and occasionally pieces that still have their original tags attached.

But even when something has been worn before, good-quality clothing that's been cared for can have years of life left in it.

A beautiful jacket doesn't stop being beautiful because someone else owned it first.

We Still Want the Treasure Hunt

Although Reinvent is organised and curated, I never want to lose the treasure-hunt feeling that makes shopping pre-loved so much fun.

Unlike a traditional fashion retailer, we can't order another ten when something sells.

We might have one.

One size. One colour.

And when it's gone, it's gone.

One day it might be a beautiful Trelise Cooper dress. The next, a fabulous Moochi jacket or a gorgeous Country Road knit.

You never quite know what's going to arrive.

That's why every visit to Reinvent is different.

My Styling Background Definitely Influences Reinvent

Being a qualified personal stylist has absolutely influenced how I look at the clothing we sell.

I'm not interested in encouraging women to simply buy more clothes.

I'd much rather help someone find the right piece — something that works with their existing wardrobe and they'll actually wear.

You'll often hear me asking customers:

"What are you going to wear that with?"

I want you to go home with something you'll genuinely love and wear, not another item that sits in your wardrobe with the tags still attached.

Why Being Selective Helps Our Consignors Too

Our standards aren't only about creating a beautiful shop.

They also help the women who consign their clothing with us.

If we accepted everything, we'd have thousands of garments competing for attention.

Instead, we select what we believe has a realistic opportunity to sell.

Keeping the boutique curated makes it easier for customers to discover pieces they love — and ultimately, that's exactly what our consignors need too.

Aimee's Tip

Whether you're shopping new or pre-loved, don't buy something simply because it's a bargain.

Ask yourself:

"Can I make at least three outfits with this using clothing I already own?"

If you can immediately picture three ways you'll wear it, you've probably found a great addition to your wardrobe.

If you can't, leave it behind — even if the price is amazing.

A bargain you never wear isn't a bargain.
