Hot Styling Tip: Be Nicer to Yourself (Starting with Your Wardrobe)
By Aimee Patchett, Reinvent Your Style
One of the biggest topics I talk about in-store and during styling sessions — and I mean all the time — is feeling better about ourselves. Not just what we wear, but how we speak to ourselves. And trust me, it all starts in your wardrobe.
So here’s a Hot Tip I want every woman to hear:
👉 If you’ve got clothing in your wardrobe that no longer fits, take it out of your everyday wardrobe.
I’m not saying you have to get rid of it completely (although sometimes that’s the best option), but please stop letting it live among the clothes you do wear. Put it in a vacuum bag, a spare wardrobe, the top of the linen cupboard — just get it out of sight. Because here’s what happens otherwise:
You see that piece — you know the one, it hasn’t fit for a while, it’s maybe 25 years old — and suddenly you’re saying really mean things to yourself.
“Oh, maybe if I didn’t eat that biscuit…”
“If I wasn’t so lazy and got to the gym…”
Sound familiar? Yeah. We’ve all done it.
But here’s the thing: if we spoke to our friends the way we speak to ourselves about our bodies, we wouldn’t have any friends left. That voice in your head is not helpful. It’s not kind. And it doesn’t belong in your wardrobe.
Not only that, but those clothes? They’re just creating visual clutter. They make it harder to see the things you do wear, and the pieces that make you feel fabulous right now. When I do wardrobe audits, the first thing I say is:
“Remove anything that doesn’t fit — we’re not styling it, so what’s the point?”
Correct. There is zero point.
And let’s talk about "goal outfits" from 25 years ago. No shade, but…, that outfit is from a different lifetime. You've already rocked it once — and it’s probably out of fashion now anyway. If you do want to set a goal, buy yourself something new to work towards. Focus on the future, not the past.
So here’s your mission (and it’s an easy one):
Go sort your wardrobe.
Take out the pieces that don’t fit.
Be kinder to yourself.
You’ll feel so much better — I promise. 💛
