Effortless Ways to Wear Your Summer Clothes in Winter

How to Transition Your Summer Outfits into Winter Wardrobe Staples

If you live in Christchurch, you probably felt a bit cheated by the summer we just had. With unpredictable weather and fewer hot days than usual, many of us didn’t get to wear our favorite summer pieces as much as we’d hoped. But instead of packing them away unworn, why not find ways to incorporate them into your winter wardrobe? Not only is this approach sustainable, but it also helps you maximise your wardrobe without spending a fortune. Here’s how you can transition your summer outfits into winter-ready looks.

1. Layer Up for Warmth

Layering is the key to making summer clothes work in winter. Start with lightweight summer dresses, blouses/shirts, or skirts as your base and build on them:

  • Dresses & Skirts: Add leggings underneath. Along with a coat/blazer, jumper or cardie and knee-high boots will make even the lightest summer dress winter-appropriate.

  • Blouses & Shirts: I wore lots of shirts with jeans this summer, add a cropped jumper over the top for added warmth. Sleeveless blouses, add a cardie or a jacket to give you some much needed warmth

2. Swap Out Sandals for Boots

One of the easiest ways to winterise an outfit is by changing your footwear. Swap your strappy sandals for ankle boots, knee-high boots, or even combat boots. These provide warmth and add a seasonal touch to your look.

3. Introduce Winter Fabrics

Blending summer fabrics with winter textures can create a chic and cozy outfit. Pair flowy summer dresses with thick wool cardigans, or wear a denim mini skirt with a cable-knit sweater and tight.  Leather and faux fur also add warmth and a touch of luxury.

4. Don’t Shy Away from Colour

Winter wardrobes tend to lean toward darker shades, but that doesn’t mean you have to retire your summer brights. Pair colourful dresses with coats/blazers, or layer bright skirts with neutral jumpers (or bright ones! We all know I love a bit of colour) to bring a bit of life to the season.

5. Repurpose Summer Pieces Creatively

  • Slip Dresses: Layer with a chunky sweater and tights, then add a structured coat.

  • Skirts Style with opaque tights and ankle boots.

  • That Gorgeous Bias-Cut Dress: What about that stunning dress you only got to wear once to a party but love the print soooo much? Try layering it with a knit, jacket, and boots for a stylish winter-ready look.

Final Thoughts

Transitioning your summer wardrobe into winter is all about layering, adding warmth with accessories, and incorporating seasonal textures. Not only does this extend the life of your clothes, but it also allows for creative outfit combinations that keep your wardrobe feeling fresh. Plus, embracing a more sustainable approach to fashion is always in style!

With the lack of a real summer this year in Christchurch, now’s the perfect time to make the most of those unworn summer pieces and give them a second chance in the cooler months. What summer items will you be styling for winter this year? Let us know in the comments!
